I came with, he was my husband at the time, he died rather a long time ago but we had been living in now what is Botswana. It was Bechuanaland, then because it was before independence of course. Previous to that we’d been living in the Gambia. He worked for the Colonial Development Corporation, which was disbanded, of course after everybody became independent and we came to England because he was having five years in England and then we were going to British Guiana. I had a nearly six year old daughter and I was having a second child and it was up to about a month before I was due and we hadn’t registered with a GP or a midwife and we needed somewhere quickly to live and we decided to come here, cos it was quite near to London, where he had to go. We were only staying five years, but in fact, everything changed because he became seriously ill. So obviously that change, and also of course by the time the five years were over, British Guiana had gained independence. Everything changed and I just stayed.
