Brian discusses how excited his mother was when she saw the washing facilities in her new flat: “she thought she’d died and gone to heaven”

We got into the chancy flats and for eighteen months we waited. My mother was in heaven because in the basement of these flats there was a huge array of huge American washing machines and she thought she’d died and gone to heaven ‘cos up to then it was hand-rollers and boiling the water and we were, the house in London was built as a single family house and there were three families living in it and the neighbours upstairs had to go through our kitchen to go to the outside bathroom and all that stuff
