"Back then, you could probably name on one hand how many families were here..."

Stevenage Museum

Interviewer: Has there been a reasonably strong Indian community in Stevenage?

Umesh: Back then, you could probably name on one hand how many families were here and they were potentially mixed as well, in the sense, I mean Hindu, they were probably Bangladeshi or Pakistani things like that. The chap that was in school at the time, he was Hindu as well but there is you know mixed group then there wasn’t practically our caste of people there.

Originally, they come from a state called Gujarat in India, I myself was born in Kenya in Africa, a little town called Gisumua, moved over there many, many years ago.

It was just a natural transition that we came over and originally my brother had come over, my sister and her husband had come over and a few years later it just became a normal transition to move from one place to the other.
