Sheila Waters-Hughes talks about catering at the ICL Christmas Party [Text only]

'Our firm had a social club which was run by the club's committee. Some of us canteen staff...'

Our firm had a social club which was run by the club’s committee. Some of us canteen staff would do the catering for the Christmas dance. I would enjoy helping, so after the day’s work I would go home to wash my hair and get very smartly dressed up and get back again within two hours to help prepare the refreshments for the interval.  After finishing my duty of serving the club members and their guests, I would be asked to dance by a few young men to the live dance band.

I could not dance very well but I soon picked up the steps of a waltz and Gay Gordons and other dances that we did then.

I met my very first boyfriend Alan who worked in one of the offices.  My workmates would all leave the counter when he came in for his tea break. My heart would skip a beat.  After a while he went to work abroad, to another one of our firms.  He did send me a postcard which I still treasure.

Working in ICL canteen was my happiest years of my life.
