Mr Lenthall discusses what he feels could have been better executed in the early days of Stevenage- parking and buses

Transcript:

Yes, well, one would have liked to have had a better appreciation of what the car parking problem was going to be, and planned for it from the beginning.  We did our very best to make an adequate provision for car parking, and in the later areas of the New Town we have a very full provision for car parking. But in the earlier parts of the New Town we still are embarrassed, the town is still embarrassed by lack of parking spaces. I think that’s one of the things we would like to have had more emphasis on. I’d like to have started with our better bus services from the very beginning, because I think inevitably if you have a poor bus service you lose your custom to the car, and it’s very hard to win it back. We proved it could be won back but it is very, very hard to do it, and I think if you can catch the situation before it arises providing the sort of bus service we were providing, very attractive bus service we provided in our experiment, I think you could have very material benefits there.
