Barbara Latham on her First Christmas in Hatfield:

“1958 was my first Christmas as a married woman in Hatfield. We were married in September, the house wasn’t fully furnished. I’m afraid in those days you collected things as you went along. We had a put you up, we had two arm chairs given to us. We had a dining room suite and I was determined to have Christmas in my home. My sister and parents came and the couple my husband used to lodge with, who became surrogate grandparents to my children. We did have chicken, because my father had been a butcher at one time… I was always guaranteed a chicken. So yes we did have our bird on Christmas Day. I made my cake, I made my pudding, I made my mince meat, whether it was any good I don’t know but I was determined that this was what married women did and I was going to do it. We had a real Christmas tree….very happy memories. (Did you have decorations?) We did have electric lights…(where were they from?) from Woolworth’s probably…and we did start the collection of all our own decorations, many of which will still have.”
